North Wiltshire Young People’s Council (YPC)
We are a group of around 24 young people (aged between 13 – 19) from across north Wiltshire who meet once a month to put young people’s views across and work on issues that important to you.
So what do we do? Here’s a list of some of the things we are working on…
We are working to challenge the negative view of young people that seems to be widely held by society. To do this we have begun by meeting with the police and talking about their view of young people. The YPC endeavours to continue to work with them to improve the relationship between young people and the police and make people realise that the vast majority of us are not yobs! We are adding to this project by trying to create good links between young people and the local media to change the way we, as young people, are viewed by the public.
We make sure that young people have a say in what happens in their local areas by putting forward young people’s views at important meetings. Often people have never thought to involve young people or ask their opinions before – we show them that young people do have something to say and are worth listening to. We show that the best people to talk to about things affecting young people are the young people themselves. This has not always happened in the past and we are working to change things.
We lobby local politicians and decision makers to make sure they hear what young people have to say.
We have consulted with other young people through events, our schools and youth centres, and discovered that these are the main issues young people care about
- Our Environment
- The negative portrait of young people
- The lack of facilities and things to do for young people
- Our Transport Network
- Our Education
We try to get involved in anything that helps push these issues forward.
