Local Democracy Week/working with the media
What to do about the issues that were raised by young people who attended the event in north Wiltshire during October. One of the main things raised by young people at the event is that they are tired of the bad image they get in the local papers. The YPC voted to work with the media in 2007 to try and change this and to get a regular slot in a local newspaper for young people’s opinions.
Work with the police
The YPC are working with the police to change the bad image that people often have of young people. Some of the YPC spent time during half-term at Chippenham Police Station and went out on the beat with police officers. This gave both sides a chance to break down some barriers and to talk about ways to make better relationships between the police and young people. The YPC will be organising an event with the police in the new year to continue this work.
Event for young people
During October the YPC asked young people to fill in a short questionnaire to find out what they thought of an idea to run an event to bring different groups of young people together. Most young people who filled in the questionnaires thought it would be a good idea to try and get more respect between the different groups that exist (eg ‘chavs’, ‘goths’, ‘rockers’ etc). The YPC are now trying to put together an idea for a really good event that everyone could enjoy and they will hopefully apply for WYPOF money to run it.
If you have any ideas or comments about any of these issues we’d love to hear from you or contact us in the forums if you want to get involved.
